" We want to gather a group of people to provide support for those [with mental health illnesses] and help them to live better lives; as one body, contribute as much as we can to making the state of Colorado, the United States of America, and the entire world, a better and happier place. "

Introduction

In the summer of 2015, the Climb Out of the Darkness (COTD) Team will embark on a 10 week tour de force of the Colorado high places. This expedition will push into the extremes of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, while traversing some of the most iconic and beautifully wild places that exist in the United States. This will be the backdrop for the overall goal of summiting the “Colorado Fourteeners” a collection of some 54 peaks in Colorado, each with a summit of over 14,000 feet in elevation. While facing this challenge of the mountains, the team hopes to not only inspire others to great aspirations and accomplishments; but also raise awareness regarding social and health issues that impact our world today.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Climb out of the Darkness team is to conduct a safe, successful, well-planned expedition that will allow each member of the team a reasonable chance for summiting each of the Colorado fourteener peaks. Further, it is imperative that the spirit, passion and action of the group be utilized for the purpose of aiding positive social change regarding mental health issues in Colorado. Finally, this same consideration must be given to inspiring others, through the same spirit, passion and action, to follow dreams and pursue aspirations of their own.

Objectives

-Create a team of motivated and passionate individuals with the proper credentials, skill level and personality to  participate in the COTD expedition.

-In the span of 10 weeks, allow every team member the reasonable opportunity to summit each of the 54 Colorado fourteeners.

-Utilizing the passion and inspiration of the expedition, the team endeavors to raise awareness regarding mental health issues that are facing Colorado and our society at large.

-Inspire others through media coverage and publication of the COTD story.

Mental Health Awareness

Mental health has many facets, and encompasses a large number of specific illnesses, conditions and diseases. This expedition has chosen this area of concern because in some way we are all touched by mental illness in its many forms. Most will never know what it means to struggle with these unseen illnesses that affects so many others. This is a very personal situation for the team members and is a relatable cause that this expedition can firmly rally around. It is the hope of the team to be able to use the media that comes with an endeavor such as this to be able to bring to light information about these diseases and work to educate and inform. Also through our partnerships, we hope to connect individuals with the organizations that are making a difference in the areas of mental health awareness and treatment.
